September happenings: H+M=Y & Amplified

A few interesting events on the horizon.

On Sunday September 5th, happy go-lucky sunshine band Xiu Xiu are headlining the third annual Hobart + Music = Yeah festival, which this year is being held across four venues, from midday to midnight. The Stabs, Drunk Elk, Kind Winds and Chrysalis will be joining Xiu Xiu at the Brisbane Hotel for the finale of H+M=Y. It'll cost $20.

The other three pieces to H+M=Y #3 are at undisclosed venues, so you'll have to email hobartmusicyeah@hotmail.com to find out what they are. Cumbersome? A little; but it's assumingly necessary. The Breeze, The Anorexic Olsen Twin, Tantrums and Matt Niedra start off the day at the mystery-soaked Venue One, while locals Gutter Parties, Tiger Choir and Spheres join Zeal at Venue Two. Native Cats, Parking Lot Experiments, Transcription Of Organ Music and Aktion Unit will make you smile/dance/cry/bleed at Venue Three. Each of these shows is $5 donation. I'm secretly hoping for a drunken conga line to grow between each venue, from 'Chris Burrows' to 'everyone on their way to the Brisbane'.

Another annual Hobart occurrence, the Arts Tasmania sanctioned Amplified 2010 program features a bunch of shows, workshops and conferences to attend from 1st to 5th of September. Highlights seemingly include...

  • The performance/installation Sound to Light, which is an "exploration in collaboration and process through the combination of sonic and temporal practice," featuring Charles du Cane, Scot Cotterell, Matt Neidra, King of the Morning, PilotError, 313RGB, Joe Hamilton, Jason James, Andrew Harper and Pip Stafford. Sound to Light will be found at the Salamanca Arts Centre on Friday 3rd September, and cost $10.

  • Melodica at St Georges Hall in Battery Point, showing off Hobart indie-pop/folk music, with Transcription Of Organ Music, Alligator Creek, Alex Gouldthorpe, Billy Whims, The Steadfast Shepard and The Love In. It's also on Friday 3rd September for $5 at the door, which earns you a copy of a limited Melodica compilation. It is an all ages show.

  • A free album launch from garage-pop outfit Sole Stickers on the 1st at your pop's garage Irish Murphys.

  • Damage at the Brisbane Hotel, featuring a mix of metal, punk and hardcore bands, with DJs spinning said genres in-between acts. Machines of Indeterminate Origins, Taberah, Meticulous Despoilment, Resilient and MSI will be playing on Friday 3rd September for $12.

  • Let's Tear This Fucking State Apart at the Brisbane Hotel, which boasts 15 bands over several stages on the evening of Saturday 4th September. Bands playing are Woof Woof, Snert, The Anorexic Olsen Twin, Mess O' Reds, Phat Meegz, Gutter Parties, Tiger Choir, Acumen, Once Upon A Time In The West, Ride the Tiger, Transcription of Organ Music and Ham. There will also be some films playing, on the roof as far as I can tell. $20.

The full program can be found online at the Arts Tas website.
